October 7, 2008 Mayor Villaraigosa was cuddling a puppy for a photo op on the steps of City Hall as Pet Smart Charities pledged $13.8 million for low cost spay/neuter clinics in the Los Angeles area. The charity stated they chose LA because of its "high euthanasia rate." You would think the Director of Animal Services would be as happy as the Mayor that his city would be receiving this much needed help. Human Rights Watch (HRW) recently published a 230 page report on Venezuela entitled ""A Decade Under Chávez: Political Intolerance and Lost Opportunities for Advancing Human Rights in Venezuela," In a press release about the report, HRW's Americas director, Jose Miguel Vivanco stated that "rather than advancing rights protections" the Chavez government has "moved in the opposite direction, sacrificing basic guarantees in pursuit of its own political agenda. In a very short period of time Cuba has suffered the impact of four cyclonic storms: Fay, which struck Cuba on August 18; Gustav, a near-category 5 hurricane which tore through the western provinces on August 30; Hannah, which caused flooding in eastern Cuba as it devastated Haiti on September 1; and Ike, which hit Cuba as a category 3 hurricane on September 7.

NAFTA has lead to the corporate dominance of North America, and has essentially given foreign investors the power to challenge and even overturn labour, public safety, and environmental laws. It continues to undermine our democracy and breakdown national sovereignty. NAFTA was a monumental step towards continental integration. Chapter 11 of the agreement has been the source of much discontent and is a prime example of why so many believe that NAFTA must be re-negotiated.
